Although Grisons covers one sixth of the Swiss territory, it has less than 200,000 inhabitants and is thus the most sparsely populated canton in the Swiss Confederation. The settlement area accounts for less than two percent of the total area. This fact is due to the topographical situation of south-eastern Switzerland. A large part of the terrain is formed by mountain ranges with more than 900 mountain peaks, crowned by the Piz Bernina at 4049 metres above sea level. The average altitude of the canton is 2100 metres above sea level, making Grisons unrivalled as the highest canton in Switzerland. Chur, the capital of Grisons, is considered one of the oldest towns in Switzerland, and the old town is well worth a visit. If you want to enjoy active, nature-loving holidays in fresh mountain air, this is the place for you!
Apart from the aforementioned fabulous mountain world, which attracts visitors from all over the world in winter and summer, and the beautiful old town of Chur, Grisons has much more to offer. One of the most popular attractions is probably the Rhaetian Railway with its viaducts and bridges, which have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With the traditional red railway, even simple journeys to your accommodation become a real pleasure. The picturesque landscape plays just as big a role as the unique civil engineering achievements. Environmental protection is a top priority in Grisons. This is best seen in several national reserves such as the 170-square-kilometre Swiss National Park, through which over 150,000 visitors pass each year. Grisons' diversity and internationality is also reflected in its role as host to the World Economic Forum, which is held annually in Davos. Few events achieve such a high level of attraction as the WEF, during which Davos is transformed into a meeting place for politicians, companies and other organisations from all over the world. Efficient infrastructure, consisting of the Rhaetian Railway, numerous mountain railways, top-class accommodation of all kinds, wellness and sports facilities as well as an excellent biking and hiking network, round off the offer.
