The cantons of Bern and Vaud alone have a share in all three major Swiss regions, the Jura, the Mittelland and the Alps. While the Mittelland is less geared towards tourism and offers mostly city breaks, summer and winter sports enthusiasts will find the widest range of activities in the Jura and the Alps. Although most sporting activities can be easily carried out in both regions, the Jura is particularly popular with climbers, cross-country skiers and snowshoe hikers due to its unique terrain. The Bernese Alps include the internationally famous peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, but there are also less well-known mountains to discover. Typical inhabitants of the Alps, such as marmots and ibexes, can be seen here in a variety of activities. Once you have had enough of snow and ice, you can enjoy an adventurous trip on one of the rivers or relax by the lake. Wine villages and vineyards are of course also on the agenda in the Three-Lakes Region.
As the cantonal and national capital, Bern receives a great deal of international attention and certainly lives up to it. The beautiful old town - awarded by UNESCO - with spacious pedestrian zones, impressive architecture and cosy restaurants serves many as a starting point for their trip to Bern or Switzerland. Should the weather disagree, the characteristic arcades along the alleyways provide shelter and allow for further exploration. Also worth seeing are the Bärenpark, the Münster Cathedral and the Bundeshaus with the adjacent Bärenplatz. Bern's ideal transport location simplifies travel and opens all doors to the rest of Switzerland. In addition to a large number of museums, you can experience culture at first hand throughout the canton, for example in a show dairy during Emmentaler production. Other cultural offerings in the areas of art, theatre, music and more can be found in Biel, Burgdorf, Thun and Interlaken, among others. More variety is hard to find.
Discover the seven youth hostels in Bern - ideal for families, groups and individual guests!
The youth hostels vary greatly in their location and facilities. While Youth Hostel Bern is located directly on the Aare River under the Federal Palace, i.e. right in the heart of the city of Bern, the two youth hostels Youth Hostel Grindelwald and Youth Hostel Gstaad Saanenland, for example, are located near the ski slopes and are thus wonderfully suited for your ski camp!
